Western Province (WP) Mountain Bike (MTB) Cross Country Marathon (XCM) Series 2019 and WC MTB XCM Champs 2019

 

The Western Province Mountain Bike Commission is pleased to announce the details of the 2019 Western Province MTB XCM Series. These events will also be the basis of qualification for Western Province MTB Cross Country Marathon Colours.

Western Province (WP) Regional XCM Series:

The following four events will form part of the officical WP Regional XCM Series:

  1.           6th July:                WP XCM #1 = Nissan Trailseeker #3 Hermanus
  2.           17th  August:       WP XCM #2 = Nissan Trailseeker #4 Wellington
  3.           31st August:        WP XCM #3 = Thys Du Toit Memorial Hopefield MTB Challenge
  4.           7th September:  WP XCM #4 = Fedhealth MTB Boschendal

Western Cape XCM Championship’s:

  •  31st August:          Thys Du Toit Memorial Hopefield MTB Challenge

 

Register for the Series if you answer YES to any of the following questions:

  • Do you take your marathon cycling seriously?
  • Do you want to know where you stand in relation to other Western Cape Cyclists?

WP Regional Series Points System:

Series three best results of four or more events to count

  • Top twenty positions per category to be given points
  • For regional colours we apply the UCI MTB points system to each race
  • A win receives 200, and then it goes down on a sliding scale 170, 150, 135, 125, 120, 115, 110, 105, 100, 96, 92, 88, 84, 80, 76, 72, 68, 64, 60
  • Each rider’s top three result points are then added together

Qualification for regional colours through the WP Regional Series Log:

  1. Less than five participants per category – only first place qualifies
  2. Less than ten participants per category – only first and second to qualify
  3. Ten and greater than ten participants per category – top three to qualify

Qualification for Regional Colours through the Western Cape Provincial Champs: Thys du Toit Memorial Hopefield MTB Challenge on 31st  August 2019 in Hopefield, West Coast.

  1. Individuals finishing in first (1st), second (2nd) or third (3rd) place at the Western Cape XCM Championships who have not qualified through the WP regional XCM series will qualify for Western Province XCM Colours only in the event that the race has a minimum of five participants. Participation in at least one WP/Cape Winelands XCM Series race is a pre-requisite.
  2. Individuals finishing in first (1st) place at the Western Cape XCM Championships who have not qualified through the WP XCM Series will qualify for Western Province XCM Colours only in the event that the race has fewer than five participants. Participation in at least one WP XCM Series race is a pre-requisite.

Qualification for Regional Colours through the SA National Champs: Nissan Trailseeker MTB series #2 Buffelsdrift SA XCM Marathon Championships 2019 on the 29th June 2019:

Individuals finishing in first (1st), second (2nd) or third (3rd) place at the SA National XCM Championships who have not qualified through the first five (5) criteria will qualify for WP/Cape Winelands XCM Colours only in the event that the race has a minimum of five participants.

  1. Individuals finishing in first (1st) place at the SA National XCM Championships who have not qualified through the first six (6) criteria will qualify for WP/Cape Winelands XCM Colours only in the event that the race has fewer than five participants.

Cyclists are advised to send their provincial XCM champs and national XCM champs results if it is applicable. Please email it to xcm@wpmtb.co.za.

Should any objection be raised as to the inclusion of a rider not included during an evaluation of the parameters above, the final decision by exception rests with the EXCO.

Please note the following:

  • No individual can qualify for regional colours without a Cycling South Africa (CSA) license. Juniors and Elites are required to have domestic racing licenses.
  • Any rider who wishes to be illegible for colours will be required to register for the XCM Series by 30 June 2019. REGISTER HERE (Button to click again)
  • Please use the same name spelling to enter events and to register for the Series Log. Please ensure that your ID number is correct on all entry sites to ensure that we can gather event results into the Series Log.
  • Colours are not awarded at any of the events.
  • Colours will be awarded at a specific awards ceremony after the final results have been obtained and calculated.
  • No rider under 19 may compete in the Full marathon race as per Cycling South Africa (CSA) rules.
  • Parents are encouraged not to ride with children U/10 (Nippers) and U/12 (Sprogs) that have registered for the series and interfere in any way with the race outcome. There will be 2-3 marshals riding with these two age categories. Not all riders have parents that participate, and we are trying to create an environment that encourages fairness and growth. These marshals will assist the riders with technical problems with their bicycles en route.
  • If a parent is found assisting a rider in any way that influences the result outcome, that rider will be reported to the Chief Commissaire (Race Referee).
  • Parents may not ride with children U/14 (Sub-Juniors) and upwards that have registered for the XCM Series under any circumstances.
  • Any rider who considers he/she has been prejudiced by any action during the competition may submit a protest to the Chief Commissaire after he/she has crossed the finish line. The rider must submit the protest in writing and it must be signed and presented within 15 minutes of the end of his/her race along with the minimum fee of R200 to the Chief Commissaire.

Raithby Road Race @ Raithby Sports Fields

The Wannabees Cycling Club is hosting this race again for a second year.   Come and enjoy what is a tough little 10k loop – 9 times for Cat 1.  Could be the hardest 90k they’ll ride this year!

League points are up for grabs so don’t miss out on this one!

There will also be an open category for scholars and those not sure if they want to really race.  This is pegged at a maximum of 3 loops of 10km.

Online entries received before midnight on Friday, 30 August 2019, will qualify for club and youth discounts. After this time online entries will close and late registration will be possible on the day at the event. No discounts will apply on the day.  Open category entries will be R50 on the day with proceeds going towards the Raithby Methodist Primary School’s upgrade programme

TuV Nord Heritage Tour by Cyclopaths CC @ Perdeberg Cellars

Heritage Cycle Tour 2019 Race Bible

The 2nd edition of the TUV Nord Heritage Tour by Cyclopaths CC will be taking place from the 21st to the 24th September 2019 from the Paardeberg Winery on the Vryguns Road just outside Paarl.

The Race Permanence will be the Perdeberg Cellars for the 1st, 2nd and 4th stage while Killarney International Raceway in Milnerton will be the venue for the circuit races on the Monday afternoon/evening.

The event forms part of the WP Road Racing League 2019. The Overall General Classification will count for points in the WP Road Racing League for all Categories.

  • KOM, Points competition for Category 1
  • General Classification leaders jersey for all Categories
  • Daily Stage prizes for all categories
  • Prize Money per stage to be confirmed closer to the commencement of the event.
    Overall General Classification prize money:
    – Cat 1 – 1st R5000, 2nd R2500,3rd R1500
    – Cat 2 – 1st R1000, 2nd R750, 3rd R500
    – Cat 3 – 1st R750, 2nd R500, 3rd R300
    – Ladies 1st R1000,2nd R750 3rd R500
    Cat 1 – Sprint Prime R1000 , KOM R1000
    NB – the organisers require at least 20 ladies to enter for the above prize money to be paid and at least 10 ladies to constitute a dedicated ladies race with adjusted prize money.

The event is open to all Juniors,Elite,Veterans and Ladies as per the WP Racing Handbook. Cyclists in the u17 age category will not be allowed to participate as the distances are longer than what is recommended by UCI regulations.

Piketberg Community Road Race by THE SPORTS TRUST 2019 @ Tollie Adams Piketberg Cricket Ground

Steynsville Senior Secondary School in conjunction with BergRivier Municipality and The Sports Trust are hosting a road cycling race in the picturesque town of Piketberg.

The various distance categories will, as usual, head off towards Redelinghuys, head back and up the Versfeld Pass over a 103km distance!

The 50km route will head out to Eendekuil Road and will make a U Turn to race on the same road back to Piketberg. These races will not tackle the mountain pass.

There will also be a dedicated 30km paracycling event which will also head out on the Eendekuil Road.

The Open Category is free for all participants, but you have to enter online to qualify for the free entry!

The event does not form part of the WP Road Racing League 2019.

Course and distances

For adult and u/19 riders we will follow the same category classification as for the road league. Riders new to our events use their PPA seeding or age groups as a basis for selecting their category. See our guide here.

  • Category 1 – 103 km
  • Category 2 – 103 km
  • Category 3 –  103 km
  • Women – 103 km
  • Open Category – 50 km
  • Para Cyclists – 30 km

All scholars and youth riders are encouraged to take part in the Open Category.

103km Route

The Category Races will be raced over an undulating 103 km course out towards Redelinghuys, riders will negotiate a U Turn in the road and return back on the same road towards Piketberg. Just before the outskirts of the Town, the race will turn right on the Versfeld Pass where a sprint prime will be contested before tacking a climb that won’t be out of place in a ‘Grand Tour’.

A Sprint  and KOM competition will be held for Category 1 only.  The sprint will be determined on the stretch prior to the turn to the pass, and the KOM at the top of the pass.

50km Route

Schools Age Categories (50 kms) will race out to the Eendekuil Road and will make a U Turn to race on the same road back to Piketberg. These races will not tackle the Versfeld Pass.

Paracycling Route

There will also be a paracycling race of 30 kilometers heading out on the same route as the 50km race

  • 08h15 – Category 3 and Women

Parking and Registration

Parking and registration will be at Piketberg Cricket Ground. The venue can be reached by taking the N7 northbound until you reach the traffic circle at the Total Petroport.  Take the left hand exit from the circle and proceed along Kerk Straat until you come to the first road to the right – it’s really a little slip road – which takes you into the road leading to the cricket grounds.

2020 WC XCO SERIES @ Bloemendal Wine Estate

Hosted on the Home Grounds of Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club, the first race of the The 2020 WC XCO Series, takes place at Bloemendal, Durbanville on the 8 February 2020.

Western Cape riders will enjoy a competitive start to the year.

Late Entries:  Late entries will be accepted at race pre-registration on the Friday before the event until 4pm only, however there will be an additional late entry fee of R50.

Cycling South Africa Membership and Licence Requirements:   To register and race (and to qualify for regional or provincial colours), South African riders must hold a valid Cycling South Africa Membership or Cycling South Africa Full Racing Licence at the time of entry.

Juniors and Elites need to have Cycling South Africa Full Racing Licences and  all other categories may have Cycling South Africa Memberships.   For more information about Cycling South Africa, Click here

Please ensure that you have paid your Cycling South Africa fee.  Kindly bring your printed Membership/Licence Card to registration.

Foreign nationals and others with valid reasons for not having Cycling South Africa Membership/ Licences may purchase a day licence at registration or via the entry process in order to race.

Series Membership:     Not applicable this year.

Compulsory Practice:      It is compulsory for Nippers and Sprogs to practice the course at the official practice on the day before the race (Friday) and checking will be done.  This is for their safety – to give parents and riders the opportunity to identify which obstacles riders are not competent to ride and to ensure that they do not get lost en route !

Race categories are based on your 2020 Birthday Age and not on your current age.  For example, if you are now 10, but turning 11 on 20 December 2020, you are a Sprog Girl for all 2020 races.

To qualify for WC Colours Awards, you need to enter your Region correctly during the race entry process.  And, the Region that you select during the entry process, must be the same as the Region that you have on your Cycling SA profile.     Please check and correct you CyclingSA profile if necessary.

Marking of the Track:  Marking of the track and the construction of the race village will commence on Thursday prior to the event.

WPMTBC only take possession of the track being utilized on the commencement of the official practice and at that stage will offer the necessary marshaling and medical services.

Technical/Feed zones:  There will be two Technical & Feed zones which will operate back-to-back on the start field.  Entrance to these zones will be restricted. Please apply for access at registration.

Century City Criterium @ Century City Sports Grounds

The Century City Sport Festival celebrates its 12th year of existence. The City Cycling Club has been hosting the criterium for the Sports Festival from the first edition and has seen it grow in leaps and bounds. Racing is around a 1.5 kilometre circuit which is secured by the very competent Century City Property Owners security staff. This is an ideal event to test the legs before the WP Road League that commences from the middle of March.

 

The season opening Century City Criterium takes place on 1 March 2020.  The ever popular crit race is hosted by Century City in conjunction with the City Cycling Club.  Racing starts at 8h00.

This event is only a training race but we will be having a podium for the first 3 finishers (no prize money). The event DOES NOT form part of the WP League Road Race series.

Categories and seeding

The 2020 season will follow the new categories and seeding guidelines. In most instances participants will already be allocated to fixed categories based on past races. See the same article on how to improve or change your seeding.

Course and distances

We will follow the same course as the previous years, starting next to the MyCity bus terminal, around the various roundabouts, and back again. This is a technical circuit with strips of cobblestone in places.

Costs

Online entries, using the Enter Now button found on this page, is the most cost effective way to enter our races. (See more details about costs and discounts). Entries close the Friday prior to the race. After this time late registration will only be possible at the registration table on the day at the event. No discounts will apply on the day. Perdeberg Classic Road Race @ Perdeberg Cellars

Our second race back after lockdown sees us return to the ever popular Perdeberg Cellars.  Dirk, Rob and the rest of the team there are welcoming us back with open arms!

 

The race consists of loops of a 50km route and we are offering either 150km or 100km races, depending on your preference.  However, we are also including an 80km race of the U/17’s and the U/19 development riders.

Registration and costs

All registrations have to be completed and paid by Thursday 1 October  because we need to perform a risk analysis and plan the start groups. These restrictions are needed to allow us to host a race while meeting the various Covid-19 restrictions and regulations.

All participants will receive a confirmation email on Friday 2 October to indicate their start group and start times. Each participant will also be assigned to either the blue or black registration area. On the day, follow the coloured arrows leading to the coloured gazebo.  Please ensure that your email address is correct on your online profile so that you can receive this email.

Parking:

Parking facilities will be on the field at Perdeberg Cellars.  Please keep the restaurant parking open for restaurant clientele.

Start Times:

Start times will be published closer to the time, however the 150km route will be starting at 8h00.  Thereafter, start times will be determined depending on the number of participants.  These details will also from part of the race participant email that will go out.

Sports Trust Virtual Cycle Challenge – Piketberg @ Virtual Event

Be a Sports Trust “HERO” for our Community

The Sports Trust is excited to be hosting its inaugural Virtual Cycle Challenge as Covid-19 has led to dramatic adjustments, changes and reinventing the way sports participation is managed the globe over. As such, The Sports Trust has adapted accordingly, to ensure that it delivers on its stated mandate and objectives.

The Trust hosts a number of community cycling events for the advancement of the Development Cycling Programme as a priority. These events provide the cyclists and the communities with platforms to promote the sport, generate income and provide an opportunity to participate in competitive races.

This inaugural Sports Trust Virtual Cycle Challenge is taking place on Sunday 11 October 2020 with the Piketberg community, identified as the main beneficiary. The format is flexible, open and accessible for all cyclists, irrespective of their physical and geographical location. You can use your road bike or mountain bike and cycle where ever you choose. Please adhere to the COVID19 regulations in your country on the day and remember to be
safe and wear your helmet.

Cyclists can choose their distance according to their fitness level, which includes 5km, 20km, 50km and 108km on the day. Please remember to record your time using any fitness device or STAVA app. Once completed, you will need to manually upload your times onto www.finishtime.co.za to be eligible for your certificate of completion.

Entries are online using www.Quicket.co.za for this challenge and cost ZAR 50 per person. Remember that you need to complete the challenge on the actual day of Sunday 11 October 2020 and manually record your times.

2021 SA XCO#3 & WC XCO#2 @ Bloemendal Wine Estate

Presented by Computer Mania and hosted on the home grounds of Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club, SA XCO#3 & WC XCO#2 (UCI Cat 1), takes place at Bloemendal, Durbanville on 17 April 2021.

On 18 April 2021 there will be a WC XCO#3 (UCI Cat 2) for Sub-Jnr, Youth, Junior and Elite, (Women and Men). Please note that you need to do a separate entry for the race on the 18th.

Cycling South Africa Membership and Licence Requirements:   To register and race (and to qualify for regional or provincial colours), South African riders must hold a valid Cycling South Africa Membership or Cycling South Africa Full Racing Licence at the time of entry.

Juniors and Elites need to have Cycling South Africa Full Racing Licences and  all other categories may have Cycling South Africa Memberships.   For more information about Cycling South Africa, Click here

Please ensure that you have paid your Cycling South Africa fee.  Kindly bring your printed Membership/Licence Card to registration.

Foreign nationals and others with valid reasons for not having Cycling South Africa Membership/ Licences may purchase a day licence at registration or via the entry process in order to race.

Compulsory Practice:      It is compulsory for Nippers and Sprogs to practice the course at the official practice on the day before the race (Friday) and checking will be done.  This is for their safety – to give parents and riders the opportunity to identify which obstacles riders are not competent to ride and to ensure that they do not get lost on route !

Race categories, Entry fees, Race times and Event info:

Race categories are based on your 2021 Birthday Age and not on your current age.  For example, if you are now 10, but turning 11 on 20 December 2021, you are a Sprog Girl for all 2021 races.

Regions

To qualify for WC Colours Awards, you need to enter your Region correctly during the race entry process.  And, the Region that you select during the entry process, must be the same as the Region that you have on your Cycling SA profile.   Please check and correct you CyclingSA profile if necessary.

Marking of the Track:  Marking of the track and the construction of the race village will commence on Thursday prior to the event.

WPMTBC only take possession of the track being utilized on the commencement of the official practice and at that stage will offer the necessary marshaling and medical services.

Technical/Feed zones:  There will be two Technical & Feed zones which will operate back-to-back on the start field.  Entrance to these zones will be restricted. Please apply for access at registration.
